How Is Child Support Determined?

In North Carolina, a standard formula is used to determine child support amounts. The formula considers many factors such as income and physical custody arrangements. You may want to have a seasoned family law attorney provide legal counsel for several reasons:

  • If one or both parents are high-earning individuals
  • If there is reason to believe one parent is hiding assets
  • If a child has a medical condition
  • If child care expenses need to be factored into the support amount
  • If you are seeking child support modifications
  • If you need a child support order enforced or you have enforcement orders filed against you

Child support orders can be modified every three years if there is reasonable cause to do so, including substantial changes in income. Exceptions to the three-year modification rule are allowed in special circumstances such as job loss.
